LIFELIKE: Day 114
LIFELIKE hit 1000 Twitter followers today! Thank you so much! The 1k special was (coincidentally) released today, you can watch it here!
The 1k special contains a dev update as well. Most of it is very similar to my logs, though it does have some bigger picture thoughts if you’re interested. I had a blast working on that video throughout the week! It was a good break from more mundane cleanups.Let’s talk about what happened this week aside from lots of video work:
- Textboxes have been cleaned up, I need to keep an eye on line breaking (which has been made automatic) throughout my plays. Aside from that, they are done!
- Asset reorganization is done. This means it’s easier for me to find things in engine while I’m working.
- Text effects load correctly and can be toggled on/off during gameplay via the accessibility menu.
- Updating debug view to work with new collision drawing methods.
- Made outdoor shadows proportional to objects casting them. (Shadows still need a bit of help on things like trees, but this is not high priority.)
- Assorted bug fixes. Some obscure softlock fixes (the lock is not present in current builds), animation fixes… etc.
This week I’m able to shift my focus back to development to tie up loose ends and begin work on Track 2 in earnest. My goals are going to be nebulous this week because I need to play through to find anything that needs work. I’m close to the bottom of my list of current fixes and need to make sure things are in working order before playtesting begins. Remaining work aside from playing lots of LIFELIKE includes:
- Show current save in menu
- Fullscreen preset recalled on load
- Toaster battle bg update (bonus points if you caught this in game)
- Sound controller update as needed
I think all of this could be taken care of in a day (hopefully tomorrow!) The rest of the week will be dedicated to playtesting the combined game. If I get burnt out from doing that, I’ll shift to Track 2 character movement animations. I’m hoping this will be one of the last weeks where I’m primarily focused on the combined game.
See you next week!

Awesome progress! I know it's a lot to do for the refactoring but it will be so worth it in the end. <3 As a narrative person, I salute you not hard-coding your text. I've never been able to get that an external system like that running myself, so hats off to you, my friend. <3 Keep going! It's looking great!
Thank you! I'm very proud of how textboxes evolved, it's already much easier for me to find and correct issues in the writing itself. Text effects are a nice bonus of switching too, it makes everything a bit more expressive. I owe those to FriendlyCosmonaut! I can't wait for people to see what's been changed!
