LIFELIKE: Day 127

Hello all! This was a bit of a slower week. Amid various administrative to-dos here’s what I accomplished:

  • Newline behavior finalized (yay!) Textboxes automatically break strings of text.
  • Save system update. I noticed an issue with saving across different slots and took a day to deconstruct, update, and rewire the system. It’s more efficient, and most importantly, saves correctly.
  • Playtesting. I’m addressing minor fixes in the Overture. The state of the game right now is playable through both episodes, but in need of polish.
  • I’m working on [REDACTED] animations as we speak. Ideally I will be halfway through their idles tonight.

Some more exciting developments:

  • LIFELIKE has an Instagram! If you’ve been around for a while, you may have already known this… I’ve rebooted it to hopefully reach new players. If you’re here from Instagram, hello! Thank you! Twitter will continue programming as usual.
  • Leo’s birthday is soon...

This week will be the same as last week’s workload, with the exception that I’m going to plan daily goals instead of weekly.

  • Continue playtesting. Focus more on Track 1.
    • Implement system to manage player health values across episodes (keen players may have noticed Leo’s HP scaling across tracks)
  • Animate: Set time limits and get last week’s cycles done!

There will be no devlog next Monday, I have an unfortunately time-consuming appointment over the weekend and into next week. During the next two weeks, I’ll give daily goal-setting a shot while trying to be mindful of my raging perfectionism burning me out. It’s about time for me to wrap things up and move onto Track 2. It won’t be perfect, but it’s a lot better than what it was!

See you in two weeks!

I always have trouble burning myself out because of perfectionism too. I'll enter these extremely manic modes where I spew out creativity but then I'm bone-dry for the next few weeks because I completely exhausted myself. I've found it's helpful to have small, obtainable goals for daily tasks like: "today I'll finish coloring the walking sprite for this character and edit the dialogue for the cutscene where they meet the cat" and be as specific as possible.

I believe in you! You've got this. <3

Thank you for your kind words Bubbly!

So far, daily goal setting is very helpful for me, I've knocked out a lot more than I would have otherwise. My trouble is the other end where I assign too much in a day and am way too harsh on myself when I can't get everything done. It's a fine balance! I'm working on tactics to not let perfectionism stifle me. Thanks for sharing your strategies and experience with managing this, it's comforting to hear :)
